Good Morning Paul Roos
Standing here knowing it is for the last time, is completely unreal. It is also an emotional moment – so please forgive me for getting emotional.
I was privileged to serve education for 37 years. My career took me to five different places and five different schools. The last 10 of those years at Paul Roos.
Serving as headmaster for 25 years was an honour and unique opportunity. It was an unforgettable journey. I could enjoy the most incredible experiences:
- From writing text books, to being national examiner and moderator for
- Economics to study tours in Denmark, Germany and Kenya, etc.
- I was involved in more than 700 rugby matches (first team). All of them either as coach or headmaster. All of them stressful.
- My career took me to Old Trafford, Club Atlético Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires and the World Cup Stadium in Rio but also to Twickenham, Cardiff(Millennium Stadium)
- It took me to the House of Commons, the British Parliament, but also to the South African Parliament
- It took me to the smallest town in South Africa and to almost all schools in SA, etc.
There were tough and challenging days but no bad ones. A normal day was full of fun, laughter and interesting events and stories.
Ek het op ’n plaas grootgeword in De Rust. In matriek het ons die eerste keer elektrisiteit gekry. In my tweede jaar op universiteit het TV na Suid Afrika gekom, vir so ’n paar uur per dag.
Ek was al skoolhoof toe selfone uitgekom het. Aanvanklik was daar een selfoon vir die skool. Jy het dit by die kantoor gaan trek as jy ’n groep iewers heen vergesel het.
Nederige dae, maar ongekompliseerd en wonderlik. Vandag is dinge anders. Modern, tegnologie-gedrewe, gerieflik, ens… steeds wonderlik, maar soms dalk té plastiek en kunsmatig.
Wat my toekoms betref, gaan ek as konsultant by ’n skoleprojek in die Stellenbosch- omgewing betrokke wees. Dit is ’n deeltydse pos gemik op opleiding aan skoolhoofde en die bemagtiging van senior personeel. ’n Mens hoop dat jy sodoende jou kennis en ervaring positief kan deel.
Ons gaan op George woon, ’n woonstel op Stellenbosch hê en pendel.
Ons gaan baie reis: ’n maand in die Krugerwildtuin, vir ons seun in Dublin kuier en einde Oktober ’n week by Sabi Sand deurbring.
Meeste van julle is vir 5 jaar hier. Ek het die voorreg van twee termyne – 10 jaar – gehad. Daar was enorme hoogtepunte. Daar het wonderlike dinge gebeur. Die infrastruktuur het die skool se gesig verander.
Vir myself is daar drie dinge wat my altyd sal bybly:

Ten spyte van die verloor
Die skooltrots
Die solidariteit
Die eenheid en broederskap
Een span, een skool
Die bevestiging dat skooltrots nie bepaal word deur oorwinning of nederlaag nie. Dit is hoe ek Paul Roos ken en wil onthou. Dit is wat Paul Roos altyd moet wees.
Ek groet vandag met ’n groot dankie vir al die goeie guns teenoor myself, al die vriendelikheid en hoflikheid teenoor myself, al die respek en waardige optrede teenoor myself.
Thank you for your extreme kindness, your extreme goodwill and for allowing me to be one of you.
We all want to leave a legacy behind. Hopefully my legacy lies not in what I have done, but in what I have stood for or represented.
Hopefully you will remember me for:
- being a man of integrity
- a man of my word
- for fairness – for ethical conduct – as a man of value
This is what I have tried to be. Hopefully I have succeeded in being that.
After 10 years I leave you with 10 thoughts:
1. Always remember the 7 core Paul Roos values:
Respect, Gentlemanship, Humility, Excellence, Integrity and Responsibility
2. Always remember that our pride in our school is vested in the ethos, values and the spirit of Paul Roos – and not in our successes and achievements.
3. The theme of 2017 Simple yet significant should be a permanent one. Worthy, class, stylish, excellent but not arrogant and extravagant.
4. The meaning of life is to find your gifts. The purpose of life is to give them away.
5. Don’t confuse a moment of life with life itself. Whether it is a good or sad moment. Life is about more. Work through hard times. Keep your feet on the ground during good times.
6. ’n Goeie naam is onvervangbaar. Beskerm jou reputasie ten alle koste.
7. Broederskap is iets wat jy leef elke dag. Don’t claim brotherhood – live it. In Paul Roos we don’t blit, but only to the point where covering up something irresponsible or really wrong. When good men do nothing, evil flourishes. Brotherhood at times requires that you blit.
8. Die toekoms is jou verantwoordelikheid. Aanvaar daardie verantwoordelikheid.
9.Alles in die lewe gaan oor verhoudinge… bou daaraan elke dag. Dan is daar geen plek vir selfsug of eie belang nie. Gesinsverhoudinge, onderlinge verhoudinge en oud-leerderverhoudinge. Om goeie verhoudinge te bou is ’n keuse en ’n gesindheid. Niemand skuld jou iets nie. Gee onbevange van jouself.
10. Laat jou geloof jou anker in die lewe bly en wees, hoe jy ook al glo of wat jou geloof ook al mag wees. Daar is geen sterker anker of plaasvervanger nie.
Paul Roos, ek groet met ’n dankbare hart. My bloed is maroen. My bloed bly maroen. Kyk mooi na mekaar. Kyk mooi na ons onderwysers. Kyk mooi na ons skool. Verwelkom die nuwe rektor met oop arms.
’n Nuwe tyd en ’n nuwe era begin. Loop mooi. Loop veilig.
