Memorable weekend for the class of 1989

A big thanks to Jan Momberg and Cornelius Smith for bringing the class of 1989 together for a very memorable weekend… and what a “motley crew” we were!

Before you take offence “motley” is an informal expression to describe a roughly organized assembly of individuals of various backgrounds, appearance and character, and honestly this pretty much summed up the group that gathered on Friday 10 May 2019 in PRG’s committee room.

We were very well received by Rector André Van Staden, who gave an informative and entertaining address. Following this, we were taken on a brief tour of the school by the Deputy Rector Frans van Niekerk.

It was amazing to see how the facilities have expanded over the past thirty years.

The boys then retired to the Akker bar and restaurant for some “light refreshments”, after which dinner and complimentary wine (thanks to Jan Momberg, Bevan Johnson and Coenie Snyman for kindly sponsoring this) were enjoyed in the Long Room at Markötter. The night was filled with laughter, fun and happy memories.

The evening’s proceedings were rounded off with all of us receiving our Old Boy ties.

Saturday afternoon was spent at the Momberg’s family farm, Middelvlei Estate, where more wine (thanks Jan!) was enjoyed and more stories were shared together with our wives and children.

The Sunday morning surf competition at Strand produced difficult conditions for most, but Gary Mandy came up tops in the end.

For those who made the effort to attend, especially from far, thanks again. A special mention must be made of Andrew Horsell, Pierre Nel and Emile Breytenbach, who travelled from the U.K.; Etienne Gouws from the Netherlands; Jean Mostert and Gary Mandy, who came all the way from Dubai and Hong Kong respectively; Tertius Stears and Steven Bergh from Namibia and Johan Joubert from Mozambique.

The class of 1989 was truly special, and it was wonderful to share the weekend with all of them again.

Thanks again to Jan and Cornelius for making this possible and lots of thanks to Elza van der Walt of the PRG Old Boy’s office.

Semper Splendidior!
