He graduated from Victoria College, Stellenbosch, in 1911 with an honours in classics. A Rhodes Scholarship took him to Trinity College, Oxford, but his studies were interrupted by the First World War. He saw active service, was taken prisoner and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery. He returned to Oxford completed his degree and joined the staff of Unisa in 1919. He became registrar in 1934, and retired in 1953.

A man of great courtesy he is remembered for an astonishing memory for names and figures. He moved to Salisbury after his retirement and was at a time secretary-treasurer and later registrar of the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, today the University of Zimbabwe.
