A unique wedding present from Paul Roos

This Royal Brierly cut glass vase depicting a few rose motives on the body of the vase was recently donated to the Paul Roos museum and archives by Anita de Beer, daughter of Sybrand Cillié (1939), who passed away in December 2016.

The vase was given by Paul Roos to Sybrand and his bride, Emcy Louw, on their wedding day on the 3rd of April 1948. The well-known rose motive on the vase, made by Royal Brierly, also depicts the mark of Royal Brierly.

The Paul Roos family and the Cillié family were neighbours in Van Riebeeck Street for many years. Anita mentioned that Paul Roos told her father on his wedding day that the rose motive would forever remind the Cillié family of the Roos family.

Paul Roos was the rector at this school when the five Cillié boys attended this school, then known as Stellenbosch Boys’ High School.
