Christopher Heywood opened up African literature

The greatest contribution imaginable by Old Boy Christopher Heywood, who recently died aged 93, was to initiate undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in African literature at the various universities where he had lectured in the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

Also remarkable was the way that he kept contact with his alma mater. This picture was taken during a visit to the PRG archives in 2009. The late Prof Christopher Heywood is in the front on the right. His older brother Brookes (PRG, 1942), Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCT, and his wife, Jeanne (Rhenish alumnus), are standing behind him and on the left hand side in front is a friend, Francois Roux (PRG, 1945), an artist.
