Pieter Andries (Piet) Meyer, who was permanently appointed as Judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal earlier this month, matriculated at Paul Roos Gymnasium in 1978.
After obtaining the degrees BA (Law) (1981) and LLB (1983) at the University of Stellenbosch, he was a practicing advocate of the Johannesburg Bar from 1986 to 2007. He was promoted to senior advocate in 2004.
After being called up six times for short terms of duty as acting judge in the Johannesburg High Court from 2005 to 2007, Piet was permanently appointed as judge in this high court in November 2007.
From 2013 to 2022 he acted four times as judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Among the publications, awards and other activities Piet has been accredited for, are:
- Contributor to Motion Court Manual for pupil advocacy training at the Johannesburg Bar (1995);
- Contributor to course materials used for an Orientation Course of Newly Appointed Judges and for the training programmes of Aspirant Judges (2012-2014);
- Participated in offering an Orientation Course for Newly Appointed Judges, Judicial Training Programmes for Regional Magistrates, Basic and Advanced Aspirant Judges Training Courses, an Aspirant Judges Mentorship Programme at the High Court, Johannesburg and in Advocacy Training Programmes (2012-2014);
- Contributor to Essays in honour of Frans Malan, Former Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal edited by Coenraad Visser and JT Pretorius (2014); and
- Participated as a mentor in the annual Mentorship Programme offered by the South African Chapter of the International Association of Women to final year law students at UJ, Unisa and Wits (2018 – 2020).
He is married to Karin and they have one child.
