International energy leader: Andries Calitz (10A1, 1976)

When the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, recently congratulated Andries Calitz on the largest ever private sector investment in Canadian history, it capped the third major intercontinental energy link Andries has been involved in establishing.

At Shell International – as a member of the Senior Executive Group of Shell – he has played a key role in the supply of energy to the economies of China, Korea and Japan from Russia, Australia and Canada.

He developed the China-Australia relationship in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipping by leading the decision to construct the first LNG carriers in China, key to Australia winning the Guangdong LNG tender, and linking Australia to China by energy exports.

He led the successful LNG marketing and first Russian gas exports into Japan (and Korea) thus enabling the massive Sakhalin Energy development undertaken by Shell-Mitsui-Mitsubishi, the largest foreign direct investment in Russia. He forged the alliances between two Russian shipping companies and Japanese LNG shipping companies, so starting the Russian capability to ship LNG via the North East passage.

He was responsible within Shell for the development of the Gorgon LNG project supply from Greater Gorgon gas fields on and off Barrow Island in Australia. Final Investment Decision (FID) was taken by Shell-Chevon-ExxonMobil in 2009, so deepening the energy ties between Australia and Japan and China. The project was the largest ever undertaken in Australia.

As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Andries heads up LNG Canada, a Shell-Petronas-PetroChina-Mitsubishi-Kogas Joint Venture to export 14 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG – equivalent to 340,000 barrels of oil per day – to Asia. Not only is he responsible for managing the joint venture, but he also takes care of relationships with the Canadian government and Canadian First Nation stakeholders, plant and pipeline development, as well as regulatory approvals.

This project took FID on 1 October 2018, so linking Canada to Japan, China, Korea and Malaysia. Representing the largest ever foreign direct private investment into Canada, this will also be the largest capital project ever undertaken within Canada.

Andries holds:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch (1981);
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of South Africa (1987);
  • A Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Witwatersrand (1991); and
  • An Advanced International Senior Management Program Certificate from Harvard Business School (1995).

Andries, a British and South African citizen, and his wife, Carina, have three children. His interests include long distance cycling, golf, water sports, reading, travel and conversation. He has travelled to more than 90 countries on private and business visits, and has lived in Johannesburg, Stellenbosch, London, Moscow, Beijing, Sakhalin-Tokyo, Perth, Lima, The Hague and Vancouver.
