The 2017 football season will go down in Paul Roos history as one which defined football and the way it is viewed at the school for many years to come. PRG Park became the established home of PRG football, where footballers could express themselves daily, proudly wearing the Jaguar logo on their respective match kits. The Jaguar sponsorship provided exciting opportunities and initiatives, enabling the managerial staff to present better equipment and coaching.
The U19A side took part in Wynberg Boys’ High’s Winter Sport Festival, and achieved mixed results. However, their performances did not go unnoticed and Gareth Wentley, Liam Farrell, Tristan Moses and Daniel Rautenbach were scouted by prestigious US Soccer Academy, the Grove Soccer Academy based on their performances. The Roos battled through a difficult league campaign, the highlight being a rampant 5-0 victory against Kylemore, with Mfundo Mashiya scoring Paul Roos’s goal of the season in that fixture.
The Interschools clash against Grey College will go down in the annuls of PRG football as the day football was finally accepted and celebrated by the Maroon Machine. Paul Roos masses filled the stands and surrounds of PRG Park cheering their men on with full force as Paul Roos took an early 2-0 lead against the men from the city of roses. Conceding 2 free-kick goals the sides were at level pecking at 2-2. The game ebbed and flowed as the final whistle began to hang over the encounter. But the Roos, known for its never-say-die attitude, were not to be denied their destiny, as in the game’s final breaths, 14-year-old Tristan Silence scored a wonder goal putting Paul Roos in front by 3 goals to 2. That is how things stayed and the men in maroon hung on for a memorable win over Grey.
