Jean Durand (2018) bags another top accolade

Jean Durand, with an earlier certificate of achievement.

The news that Jean Durand, last year’s winner of the US Chancellor’s Medal, received another coveted medal, was broken to him in probably the best possible way: a letter of the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, Prof Ingrid Woolard.

Prof Woolard wrote:

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that you are the 2022 winner of the prestigious CGW Schumann Medal for the best postgraduate student in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) at Stellenbosch University (SU).

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science nominated you and the Faculty Committee met on Friday and deemed you to be the worthiest candidate. Congratulations!

While this award does not carry a monetary reward, it is the highest student accolade in the EMS Faculty. You are a very worthy winner with an extraordinary academic record: top student in Applied Mathematics of the first year in 2019, under the top 30 first year students of the 2019 academic year at Stellenbosch University, an average of 90% in your BCom (Hons) in Mathematical Statistics programme, and was awarded the Chancellor’s Award end of 2022.

Not only do you have an extraordinary academic record, but you give back and share your knowledge to other students by assisting students in the Data Science- and Computer Science modules. You are a great inspiration to us and to your fellow students.

This award, however, will be celebrated with  a lunch or dinner hosted by the faculty. Jean’s name will be added on the Roll of Honour in the foyer of the  CGW Schumann Building.

A report will also be placed on the Faculty’s website.
