New Parents and Old Boys Taking Hands at Klub 1000

KLUB 1000 at Paul Roos Gimnasium is more than just a fundraising initiative; it’s a community that brings together new parents and Old Boys with social networking benefits for all its members.

Every year, many new parents join the school environment and it is important to walk a path with them while nurturing and developing their sons’ aspirations for the future. Paul Roos strives to offer those who are not old learners a chance to be involved and part of the Paul Roos experience.

KLUB 1000 creates a space that ensures no new parent ever feels excluded. It offers parents the opportunity to shake hands and share a glass of wine with other parents and Old Boys while supporting the school and its scholars. In a nutshell, KLUB 1000 is inclusive of new parents as well as Old Boys. It provides the best of both worlds!

Social and Fundraising Events

KLUB 1000 hosts social and fundraising events throughout the year. Profits are utilized to fund special projects involving the upgrading and maintenance of infrastructure at the school, wherever the need or shortfall may be. Be assured that all funds are spent to better the future of Paul Roos Gymnasium.

One of the highlights this year was that after all the home games at Markötter, KLUB 1000 members, PRG parents, and guests from other schools were hosted outside the Markötter Long Room with live music and boerewors rolls.

Annual Potjiekos Competition

The annual potjiekos competition held on 4 March was a great success with 22 potjies entered and more than 200 parents attending the event. We look forward to next year’s potjiekos competition on 1 March 2025. More information will be available once the school reopens.

We wish all our members and supporters a blessed festive season and family time and look forward to continuing the tradition next year.

You can be part of our future – Help make central air-conditioning systems possible at school

The vision of the Paul Roos 150 Trust Fund is to maintain academic excellence at Paul Roos Gymnasium despite the challenges to quality education in South Africa. The Trust Fund aims to secure the future of the school as an institution of superior instruction for generations to come.

The Paul Roos 150 Trust Fund has agreed to provide financial support for the installation of central air-conditioning systems that will serve all classrooms, administrative offices, as well as the Japie Krige hall and PRG Centrum.

Stellenbosch experiences extremely high summer temperatures and humidity, which may affect our learners’ ability to concentrate. After careful consideration of the merits of a proposal received from the school, the Trust decided to support the installation of central air-conditioning systems as it will help to create a conducive learning environment.

Established in 2014, the Trust Fund was created to provide financial support to PRG for capital-intensive projects. The Trust is committed to helping maintain and uphold the school’s academic excellence to secure the school for future generations.

Through donations and fundraising projects, the Trust has assisted the school with various projects, the most recent of which was the upgrading of the Science Laboratories and the installation of an additional backup power supply.

This project will entail a significant capital outlay, and the Trustees are hoping that Old Boys, parents, and other donors would be willing to co-contribute to this initiative.

For further information, please refer to the below link:

It is important to note that donations to the Trust are tax-deductible, and Section 18A certificates will be issued. The Paul Roos 150 Trust Fund’s bank details will be supplied upon request.

Following in his grandfather’s footsteps: Samuel Badenhorst

Samuel Badenhorst, an 18-year-old matric learner at Paul Roos Gimnasium, aspires to follow in the footsteps of his legendary grandfather, Jan Boland Coetzee, a former Springbok flank and renowned figure in the wine industry. Inspired by his grandfather’s toughness and fearless play under the mentorship of Danie Craven, Samuel has already made a mark in rugby, playing for the South African U18B sevens team and winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games. This year, he played for the South African U18A team, defeating Georgia. Samuel dreams of playing for the Junior Boks and, ultimately, the Springboks.

During a visit to his grandfather’s home in Stellenbosch, Samuel shared his ambitions with Marguerite van Wyk of Rapport, while reflecting on the pride and influence his grandfather has had on his rugby journey. Jan Boland Coetzee, despite the visible signs of aging, still takes great pride in his grandson’s achievements and follows his rugby career closely. Samuel plans to enjoy his rugby first before pursuing further studies, focusing on his goal of donning the Green and Gold jersey one day.

Riley Norton: A rising star beyond Paul Roos Gimnasium

Riley Norton, 2023/24 headboy, an exceptional young athlete at Paul Roos Gimnasium, has made a name for himself in both cricket and rugby. However, it was the Springboks’ success that nudged him to choose rugby over cricket. Born into a sports-loving family in Stellenbosch, Riley has been actively involved in sports from a young age. His father, Chris Norton, a former Western Province rugby player, and his two older brothers have been significant influences on his sporting journey.

Despite his outstanding performance in cricket, including being named the CSA Boys’ U16 Player of the Tournament in 2022, Riley decided to focus on rugby. His dedication and hard work have earned him a place in the high-performance squad for the SA U19 TAP (Talent Acceleration Programme) camp, giving him a chance to be selected for the U19 World Cup 2024 and a Bangladesh tour. Riley continues to inspire his peers and younger athletes at Paul Roos Gimnasium with his passion and commitment to rugby.

Old Boys-spanne vaar goed in hul wedstryde teen Grey College

Vandag, Woensdag 31 Januarie is amptelik die laaste dag van my 42 jaar onderwysloopbaan waarvan ek 35 jaar en 8 maande by Paul Roos betrokke was. Nou pak ek amptelik my nuwe beroep as pensioenaris aan.

Blykbaar is dit die gevaarlikste beroep in die wêreld. Niemand het dit nog ooit oorleef nie!

Unrehabilitated “terrorist” fought against injustice right to the end

The passing of Old Boy Stephen Johannes (Steve) Marais (1974), anti-apartheid activist, writer, translator, eco-socialist warrior and gardener, on 18 March 2024 in Johannesburg, brough back memories of an era long past and showed how Paul Roos Gymnasium helped to shape South African history in different ways.

SA Rugby Mag features Paul Roos Gymnasium

As part of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) Origin Rounds the SA Rugby Mag looked at some of the famous local rugby schools that have produced DHL Stormers over the years.

The idea of #GrassrootsToGreatness was to celebrate the communities and people who helped launch the careers of hundreds of rugby players and coaches. In the spotlight were the identities of the clubs, schools and communities that have done an incredible job of giving children the chance to first pick up a rugby ball and guide the lucky few good enough to reach the elite level.

On February 14, 2024 Paul Roos Gymnasium was featured.
